The power tussle for the soul of Rivers State reached a crescendo yesterday with the declaration of the results of 22 out of 23 councils in the local government elections held in in the state yesterday.
Governor Sim Fubara had asked his loyalists to contest elections under the banner of Action Peoples Party, APP thereby abandoning the Peoples Democratic Party which hierarchy was suspected to have been hijacked by the former governor, Nyesom Wike.
the elections were conducted despite efforts to forestall it. The Inspector General of Police had issued an order that the police would not participate in the election an action seen by many as a ploy to give teeth to Nyesom Wike’s and his cohorts in their bid to frustrate Governor Fubara. However the people took up the gauntlet and provided security for themselves, held the elections and declared results.
The former President, Goodluck Jonathan had warned that any attempt to cause violence during the election could lay the foundation for the death of democracy in Nigeria.
