At least 15 people were injured, one of them seriously, after two trams collided on Rotterdam’s iconic Erasmus Bridge in the Netherlands on Wednesday.

The collision occurred on the landmark bridge, which spans the River Maas and serves as a major transport link in the Dutch port city.

Webcam footage showed one tram crashing into the rear of another, sending debris across the roadway and causing significant damage to both vehicles.

An AFP reporter at the scene observed mangled metal and shattered glass as emergency responders cordoned off the bridge and closed it to traffic in both directions.

Emergency personnel evacuated injured passengers using stretchers and wheelchairs, while the seriously injured victim was taken to hospital.

Rotterdam authorities initially reported 18 injuries but later revised the figure to 15, according to Dutch national broadcaster NOS.

Reacting to the incident, Rotterdam public transport operator RET said it was cooperating with emergency services to determine the cause of the collision.

“We have seen the footage and are deeply shocked,” the company said in a statement.

“In cooperation with the emergency services, we will do everything we can to uncover how this could have happened,” it added.
