Man rejects N600,000 compensation for slain son, knocks police

A man in Sokoto State, Danjuma Sidi, has accused the police in the state of trying to shield the alleged killers of his son, Mohammed Danjuma.

Sidi said 34-year-old Mohammed, a graduate of the Nigerian Maritime Academy, Oron, was murdered on July 7, 2022, within the neighbourhood at Clapperton Road, Sokoto.

According to him, there is a video clip showing how his son was tortured and dehumanised till he gave up the ghost in the hands of his killers.

Sidi, who spoke to journalists about the matter, accused the police of foot-dragging on the case, alleging that it was a ploy to sweep the matter under the carpet.https://imasdk.googleapis.com/js/core/bridge3.549.0_en.html#goog_408476622

He wondered why the police had not started prosecution of the suspects, five months after his son was allegedly murdered, and despite a video showing his alleged killers.

Sidi said, “There is the evidence of a trending video where my son was handcuffed, tortured, dehumanised and debased before giving up the ghost. The police then swung into action and six suspects were arrested.

“In the course of investigation, the family of the suspects reached out to me and begged for amicable resolution of the matter, devoid of police involvement. I told them to allow justice to prevail as no resolution would bring my son back to life. They left and promised to get back to me.

“To my dismay, they came back after two previous failed appointments and offered me N600,000 only, as compensation for the life of my son in order to bury the matter. This, I outright rejected because if they are to offer me monetary compensation Islamically, it is not this paltry N600,000.

“I am using this opportunity to call on the Sokoto State and the Federal Government, the Inspector-General of Police, human rights organisations and the media to help me get justice for the departed soul of my son.”

Efforts to get the Sokoto State Police Command to react were unsuccessful.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Abubakar Sanusi, promised to get necessary information on the case and revert.

However, he neither picked several calls put across to him nor replied a text message sent to his mobile line, thereafter.
