CAF Champions League: Rivers United attacked in Sudan

One of Nigeria’s representatives in the CAF Champions League Rivers United have alleged that they were attacked on Friday by fans of Sudanese club Al Merreikh. This happened ahead of their Round of 32 second leg fixture in Omdurman this Saturday. Rivers hold a 3-0 lead from the first leg in Port Harcourt last week.

The club in a statement on Friday said they will write to CAF to protest the attack on their players and officials. According to the statement by the club’s spokesman, Sammy Wejinya, Rivers United were pelted with various objects as they headed for training at the Al-Merrikh Stadium. The statement said an official of the club, Bright Ogude, was injured after an object thrown by the fans hit him in the face.

“This is unacceptable. We treated them very well when they came to Nigeria for the first leg and there were no complaints,” Rivers State Commissioner for Sports, Boma Iyaye, who led the team to Sudan, was quoted as saying in the statement.

“We are bitterly disappointed at the attacks directed towards us on Friday and the cub will write a letter to CAF to protest this unwarranted treatment meted out to us. Hopefully, CAF will take action on it.”
