Association decries status of donkey business

Donkey Dealers Association has decried the status of donkey business in Nigeria. The association said the industry had directly employed over 25,000 and created 180,000 jobs indirectly.

Its National President Mr Dike Ifeanyi, who spoke in a statement in Abuja, called on the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to encourage the donkey business in the country.

He said the NCS should encourage development of ranches and support breeding of donkeys, which Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine services (NAQS) has mapped out as solution to the depleting population of donkey in Nigeria.

He pleged that the association would upscale the economy by doing business in line with laid down rules and in accordance with international best practices

Ifeanyi said the efforts of NAQS was yielding results in ranching and breeding for which its members have set up ranches in parts of the country.

“The association is also of the view that only the Quarantine Service ( NAQS) is legally empowered for certification of all agricultural products and as a result of its duty of certification of agricultural products, NAQS should be allowed to do its job as it is obtained globally.

“The national body of the association reiterates its determination to fish out all medlers who have made the business unwholesome and illegal, particularly Chinese smugglers who it said are bent on sabotaging NAQS in regulating this donkey industry in Nigeria”, he said.
