Akanu Ibiam Int’l Airport upgraded to a Regional Airport.

The Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu has been upgraded to a regional status bringing to 4 such airports in the country. Other regional airports are Lagos, Kano, Abuja and Port Harcourt.

Drumnewsonline gathered authoritatively that the the Federal Ministry of Aviation gave the approval few days ago thereby extricating the airport from the wings of the Port Harcourt International Airport Omagwa which before now was overseeing the Enugu Airport. Port Harcourt airport will be incharge of airports in the South south geopolitical zone while Akanu Ibiam Airport will be overseeing the Southeast which comprises of Anambra, Owerri and Ebonyi airports.

Our source disclosed that with the new status Enugu would witness beefing up of the infrastructure of the airport and the coming of more international airlines. The new airport terminal under construction at the airport is not yet completed despite the fact that similar structures started in other airports such as Lagos, Abuja and Kano had all been commissioned. The Enugu State government Drumnewsonline gathered, is planning to build a Cargo terminal at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport which the new State Governor, Barr. Peter Mbah is holding dear to his heart. The governor has made the development of Special Economic Zones as one of the priorities of his administration and a cargo terminal in Enugu will serve the Southeast economic hub.
