Senate on collision course with the Presidency. Suspends RECs confirmation in protests against Buhari’s refusal to sack Magu

What appears a stand off between the Senate and the Presidency has played out at the upper chambers with the Senators standing down the confirmation of the 27 nominee-RECs submitted by the President. The Drum newsonline gathered from reports monitored this afternoon that the Senators are demanding that the Acting Chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, be removed from office forthwith having failed confirmation tests on two occasions.

The Senators also accused some appointees of the president of disrespecting the National Assembly, which could be a veiled reference to the Comptroller General of Customs, Hameed Alli, who had defied all summons by the hallowed chamber.

The Senate in what seemed an unanimous decision resolved to suspend the confirmation in protest of the reasons mentioned above. The Senators will revisit their confirmation in 2 weeks time to see if the Presidency would accede to their demand.

It will be recalled that the president, Muhammadu. Buhari last week submitted a list of 27 persons to the Senate for appointment as Resident Electoral Commissioners of INEC.

We will keep you informed as the drama unfolds..
