Police repel IPOB’s attack on Imo station

Gunmen suspected to be members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) yesterday attacked a police station at Njaba, Imo State. But they were repelled by policemen who prevented them from gaining entrance into the facility.

The station came under heavy bombardment, with the hoodlums throwing Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) into the facility amid gunfire. Operatives at Njaba station pushed out the invaders with support from the divisional police.

Addressing newsmen yesterday, police spokesman Michael Abattam said the gunmen attacked the police station at about 0140 yesterday, but failed to gain entrance into the station.

He said the gunmen “came in their numbers, throwing Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and shooting rapidly, attempting to gain entrance into the station but were repelled.”Abattam said the gunmen suffered a heavy defeat and retreated in the direction of Njaba Bridge

At the bridge, the gunmen ran into a detachment of soldiers, who engaged them in another gun battle.

“During the exchange of gunfire, the hoodlums suffered huge casualties, which made them scamper into the bush, abandoning their operational vehicle,” he said, adding that items recovered at the scene included one pump action gun and a Sienna vehicle.

Abattam said, “No life was lost, no arms or ammunition carted away, and the building of the police station remained intact apart from the minor damage to the perimeter wall fence.”
