NSCDC arrests ‘doctor’ who infected patient with HIV

Operatives of the Nasarawa State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has ar­rested a man, Jonathan Sidi Ibrahim, for illegal operation as medical prac­titioner in Iwashi, Doguo of Sarkin Dawaki ward in Doma Local Government of Nasarawa State.

A statement by the Command’s Public Rela­tions Officer, Aso Okereke, explained that Ibrahim, male and 30 years old, was arrested for operating an unregistered clinic in the area, known as Abrason Destiny Clinic. It further said that preliminary in­vestigations revealed that the suspect had in 2015, transfused unscreened and infected blood to an unsus­pecting patient and in the process caused the patient to be infected with Human Immune Virus (HIV). The statement also said that Ibrahim also con­fessed to running an illegal clinic at Dawakin Ward of Doma and had transfused unscreened blood to one Emmanuel Alaku aged 6 years, who is now HIV positive.

Speaking to newsmen, the state Commandant, Lawan Bashir Kano, said the Command is of the view that if such persons are not brought to book, there will be increased cases of untimely death occasioned by fake medi­cal treatment. He called on members of the public to be vigilant and wary of fake medical practitioners and in the same vein, report such persons to the nearest se­curity agency for prompt action to be taken.

He also explained that the Corps in collaboration with the state Ministry of Health and the Medi­cal and Dental Council of Nigeria, Nasarawa State Chapter, would ensure that the suspect be pros­ecuted before appropriate court to answer for the full charge against him. The Commandant also commended the partner­ship of the press in the tasks of ensuring the secu­rity of life and property of the citizens of the state.
