Nigeria’s educational system is garbage, Shagari’s grandson reacts to corps members’ interview

Bello Shagari, a grandson of late former President Shehu Shagari, has reacted to a video that shows members of the National Youth Service Corps getting interviewed during their Passing Out Parade, otherwise known as POP. One corps member, a lady, was asked by an interviewer what brought her out to the venue of the POP. The lady answered saying, “I’m here to collect my discharge,” meaning she came for her NYSC discharge letter.

When asked to state the full meaning of POP, she said, “Passing out… I can’t remember what the last P stands for.” She later concluded, saying POP stands for “Passing Out Power.” A young man dressed as a corps member was asked for the meaning of NYSC. He answered, saying, “National Youth Service Commission,” which is wrong.

A lady who was asked the same question gave an answer which had her mention corps as “corpse”. When asked to spell the word which C stands for in NYSC, she replied, saying, “Are you here to mock me?” When pressured further, the lady spelt the word as OROPES.

Another lady stated that NYSC means “National Youth Service Corporation,” despite wearing a shirt that had it written on it. “National Youth Service Camp,” said one lady who spelt the Camp as CMP. Sharing the video on Facebook, Shagari captioned it, “This is enough to inform you that our educational system is garbage.”

Reacting, one Facebook user, Patience Shelu, said, “It’s such a pity. A whole graduate. They don’t even know what they are doing. Tomorrow dem go dey form graduate upandan… Common go and sit down.

Henry Asuenimhen E said, “I wonder how someone will serve for 12 months and not still find out the meaning of all these words: NYSC, POP… and everything relating to this. It’s a big shame on them all. Graduates my foot.” According to Tracy Owen, “How can you get a job when you don’t even know the meaning of NYSC? Nonsense.”

Amicable Don said, “Just imagine the type of Education you have in Nigeria, and millions will be parading themselves as graduates. I weep for Nigeria.”
