Lions Club gives free cataract surgeries to less-privileged

The District 404B1 International Association of Lions Clubs on Wednesday, June 1, sponsored cataract surgery for six less-privileged persons Ogun State. The surgery, which took place at the General Hospital Ota, was part of the group’s resolve to fight preventable blindness in the country.

The humanitarian service provider group also donated white canes and financial support for many visually impaired people across Lagos and Ogun states to mark this year’s Helen Keller World Sight Preservation Day.

The District Governor, Rasheed Babatunde Ologundudu, while speaking, reiterated the group’s commitment to continue supporting the government in boosting the health care sector.

He said investing in eyesight is one of the club’s commitments to the society and would not relent in its efforts to help the less-privileged with poor eyesight.

“Lions Clubs all over the world has five core projects; they are eyesight, diabetes, environment, feeding the hungary and cancer awareness campaign. I thank all the club members for always being happy to be part of the milestones. We will continue to support where necessary,” he added.

The year 2022 project chairperson, Mr Babatunde Alli-Balogun, said sight preservation programme is Lions Clubs adopted yearly activities to reach out to large number of less-privileged who are underserved or who have limited or no access to eye health care services.

He said the programme always featured walk for sight, screening/treatment of cataract, donation of white canes to the blind as well celebrating them to enable them have a sense of belonging in the society.
