Federal Government sacks Acting UNILAG VC, Soyombo .

Dr Wale Babalakin-led Governing Council of the University of Lagos seems to be loosing out in the infighting that has engulfed the citadel of learning for some weeks now. The Federal Government has issued a directive on Friday that the University of Lagos Senate nominate an acting Vice-Chancellor and the newly appointed acting VC, Prof Omololu Soyombo, has stepped down “with immediate effect”.

The directive of the Federal Government is viewed in some quarters as having a salvo aimed at shooting down the earlier decision of the University’s Governing Council led by Dr Wale Babalakin.

The governing council led by the Pro-Chancellor, Dr Babalakin, had appointed Soyombo last week after it sacked Prof Oluwatoyin Ogundipe. It would be recalled that the University Senate rose up in defiance of the Governing Council directive stating that it did not follow due process. The action of the University Senate may have influenced the action of the Government.

Details later…
