Corruption: Interpol hunts Chinese billionaire

China’s Foreign Ministry on Wednesday said Interpol had issued a notice for the provisional arrest of exiled billionaire Guo Wengui. Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said at a news briefing said that what the ministry understood was that Interpol had issued a red notice for suspect Guo Wengui.

“What we understand is that Interpol has already issued a red notice for suspect Guo Wengui. For specific circumstances, you may contact the relevant departments,’’ Lu said. Guo has been wanted by Chinese police since 2014 for allegedly paying an 8.72-million-dollar bribe to the nation’s deputy spy chief Ma Jian. Meanwhile, Jian has been charged with corruption in February.

In a series of interviews with overseas Chinese media this year, Guo threatened to blow the lid of corruption at the highest levels of China’s ruling Communist Party elite. Report says a red notice is not an international arrest warrant.

According to the Interpol website, it is a request to locate and provisionally arrest an individual, pending extradition. The outspoken property tycoon was not listed on the website but a “red notice” has been issued. Interpol has said it would not comment on specific cases or individuals. Guo’s Twitter account suggests he may reside in London.

Guo, also known as Miles Kwok, is a member of the Florida resort Mar-a-Lago where President Donald Trump hosted Chinese President Xi Jinping in April. However, neither Britain nor the U.S. has extradition treaties with China.
