Buhari appoints Major General Yahaya, new COAS

The President, Commander-in-chief, Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari has announced the appointment of Major General Farouk Yahaya as the new Chief of Army Staff replacing the late Lt. General Ibrahim Attahiru who died in a plane crash last week in Kaduna.

In a statement today signed by the Acting Director, Defence Information, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, it reads: “The Commander fine bird of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhanmadu Buhari, has appointed Major General Farouk Yahaya as the Chief of Army Staff. Prior to his appointment, Major General Yahaya was the General Officer Commanding 1/Mechanized Division of Nigerian Army and the incumbent Theatre Commander of the Counter Terrorism and Counter Insurgency military outfit in the North East code named Operation Hadin Kai”

Like was done during the last appointment of Service Chiefs, his name will subsequently be forwarded to the National Assembly for confirmation.

The appointment has put paid to various speculations about a successor to the late Chief of Army Staff.
