Almost two weeks into the beginning of the sale of expression of interest and nomination forms for the November 6 Anambra State Governorship Election, no aspirant in the All Progressives Congress (APC) has come forth to obtain the forms. The Caretaker Extra-Ordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC), party chieftains and political observers are concerned about the lukewarm attitude of party members in the state towards the purchase of the forms.
The concern is coming on the heels of the party’s renewed quest to win in Anambra State in order to increase its presence in the Southeast before the general election in 2023. The Nation investigation at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja at press time showed that one undisclosed aspirant had paid N22 .5 million, being the cost of the forms, to a bank, but yet to obtain the forms.
At the last count before the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) released the November 6 date for the governorship election, no fewer than nine persons in the APC were touted to have indicated interest in the party’s ticket for Agu-Akwa Government House in Akwa. A source in the party, who spoke in confidence, confirmed the development.
He said: “As at today (Tuesday) nobody has come to obtain the forms. But in the course of our account reconciliation at the bank, we found out that a one-time senator has paid, but he has not come for the forms. Although there is still time for the sale of forms, the lukewarm attitude of our members in Anambra State is not in tune with the vision of the CECPC to win more states in the Southeast.
“The just concluded membership registration, revalidation and update were well received by the people of the state, as our membership figure in the state and indeed Southeast has increased. We have to capitalise on this by winning the state.”
The timetable and schedule of activities released by the party showed that the sale of expression of interest and nomination forms started since April 16, while the primary election is slated for June 26.
