The Executive Director, Justice First Initiative, a Human Rights/ Civil Society organization, Barr. Uche Maduemesi has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to have the political will to follow through the probe of the Central Bank and the activities of the suspended Governor, Godwin Emefiele. According to him, it is an opportunity for him to redeem his image because Nigerians expect more from him as the suspended CBN Governor had left so many things hanging during his tenure which they are demanding explanations.
In a Press Release dated 10th June, 2023, issued by the organization titled: CBN Probe: History beckons on President Tinubu, the organization pointed out that Nigerians are eager to know what transpired during the currency redesigning saga,: What resources were deployed to it; what quantity and value of currency notes were minted; where are those new notes stockpiled? etc. “Till date it is not certain how much resources was deployed in the redesigning of the currency, how much quantity and value was redesigned, minted and pushed into the economy. It is surprising that up till now, the poorly redesigned currency notes are nowhere to be seen in circulation and one wonders if at all they were minted. President Tinubu should assist Nigerians in finding out from Emefiele and his cohorts, details about the redesigning saga and all there were to it.”, the statement said.
Barr. Maduemesi observed that Emefiele desecrated the exalted office of the apex bank governor when he delved into partisan politics against all advise and known practice and urged the probe panel to inquire into the resources of the apex bank that were used to pursue his botched presidential ambition.
President Tinubu should ensure that only technocrats who have the political will to do the right thing no matter whose ox is gored, and schooled in the economy that should be appointed to the panel to give Nigerians a fresh breadth. He should also as the President, have the political will to see through the probe and not to abandon it midway due to personalities that might be involved in the saga. “History beckons on Tinubu to etch his name in the annals of history as a man ready to right the wrongs of the past. It is our hope that the probe of the Central Bank and the activities of Godwin Emefiele will go full cycle and not the way of several probes which were abandoned or whose results never saw the light of the day”. Nigerians are waiting and watching.
