The Senate today at its resumed plenary resolved to expunge the vexatious direct primary only clause as the method to be adopted by political parties to elect its candidates. The issue has become contentious since the National Assembly passed the Electoral Act late last year and the President, Muhammadu Bihari had declined accenting to the bill when forwarded to him. Bihari had represented the bill to the Assembly requesting that the vexatious clause be removed.
It would be recalled that major stakeholders had put pressure on the president not to assent to the bill as forwarded to him. When everyone thought the President was going to toe the line of the Assembly by assenting to it, he declined assent.
