Awujale’s death, a monumental loss, Fayemi mourns

The immediate past Governor of Ekiti State and former Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona.

The revered monarch died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 91.

In a statement released on Tuesday by Mallam Ahmad Sajoh, the head of the Fayemi Media Office, Fayemi described Oba Adetona’s demise as an immense loss to Nigeria’s traditional institution and the nation at large.

Fayemi was quoted as saying in the statement, “I received the news of Kabiyesi’s transition with profound sadness.

“The death of Oba Adetona marks the end of an extraordinary era in traditional rulership in Nigeria.”

The former governor lauded the late Awujale’s remarkable 65-year reign, which commenced on April 5, 1960, highlighting it as a testament to his exceptional leadership and unwavering dedication to his people.

Fayemi emphasised Oba Adetona’s role as a unifying figure whose influence transcended Ijebuland, impacting the entire Southwest region and Nigeria as a whole.

Fayemi further praised Oba Adetona for his wisdom, temperance, and diplomatic approach to conflict resolution, which earned him widespread respect across diverse ethnic and religious groups.

He noted that the late monarch’s vision for development, coupled with his deep reverence for tradition, established a unique model of leadership that effectively bridged modernity with cultural heritage.

Recalling specific contributions, Fayemi underscored Kabiyesi’s consistent advocacy for good governance, his role as a voice of reason during challenging periods, and his steadfast support for democratic institutions.

He described the Awujale’s palace as a “sanctuary of wisdom” where leaders from various political backgrounds sought guidance and counsel.

Fayemi also acknowledged the late monarch’s significant efforts in promoting education, fostering peace, and championing socio-economic development within Ijebuland and beyond. He stated that these contributions would forever be remembered.

The former governor concluded by asserting that the void left by Oba Adetona’s passing would be profoundly felt across Nigeria, particularly in the Southwest, where he played a crucial role in maintaining inter-communal harmony and fostering regional cooperation among traditional rulers.

Fayemi extended his condolences to the Adetona Royal Family, the people of Ijebuland, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, and the entire state of Ogun, offering prayers for the departed monarch’s eternal rest.
