Truck drivers protesting alleged Police brutality block Numan-Gombe highway

The Yola-Numan road has been blocked by protesting truck drivers. The protest, which started around 9:00am, was trailed by chaos that disrupted vehicular movements and caused gridlock for commuters plying the busy Numan-Gombe highway. The protest, The PUNCH gathered, was due to allegations of Police brutality.

An eyewitness travelling with his family, who was held up in the traffic, said the incident had caused passengers travelling on that road to be stranded for hours. “Protest by truck drivers on Yola-Gombe highway has disrupted vehicular movement. I cannot get close to verify because I am travelling with my family. We have been held up here in the gridlock.

“His phone and money were collected by Police; his vehicle was also dented in several places; so, he is demanding the sum of N40,000; else, his colleagues said, they will not clear from the road,” the source stated.

Other truck drivers, it was learnt, out of solidarity, had parked their trucks in such a way that made the road impassable for other motorists

“The arrival of a Toyota Hilux with about eight policemen in uniform and mufti at the scene about an hour ago has not brought any improvement to the chaos,” the source added.
