The Enugu State Governor, Dr Lawrence Ifeanyichukwu Ugwuanyi has splashed millions of naira in paying medical bills for the indigent members of the society as part of his 57th birthday celebration, Drumnewsonline learn, exclusively.
Ugwuanyi who turned 57 last Friday according to a source available to Drumnewsonline, detailed some of his close aides to go to some public health facilities to get details of patients who had been detained in hospitals for their inability to offset their medical bills. These aides, after obtaining the facts and figures paid the bills of the affected people. According to it., “in my hospital, Enugu State University Teaching Hospital(ParkLane) Enugu where I work, bills running in to a couple of millions were paid for some indigent patients in my ward, who have been finding it difficult to pay their bills and have been detained by the hospital authorities”
‘I learnt that the same benevolence was extended to other public hospitals”.
Drumnewsonline also gathered that the Governor made the birthday gifts discreetly without making publicity capital out of it as some of his colleagues and public officials do.
An official of the State Government who spoke to drumnewsonline based on anonymity could not confirm or deny the story. He however added that the governor has a large heart and such “goodness” could not go beyond him. “He has been helping people in the past without publicity and his act was the best birthday gift he could give to people of the State and the society”
Few weeks ago, Governor Ugwuanyi flagged off the construction of a flyover bridge at the T-junction, Abakpa-Nike to ease the traffic congestion often experienced on that route which is the gateway to Nsukka and Abuja from Enugu the capital city.
